How Does Tax Reform Affect Not-for-Profit Organizations?

Course Overview
The enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act brought fundamental changes to U.S. tax law, from lower tax rates to a greater exemption from federal estate and gift taxation. Fortunately for us, Loscalzo Institute's Allen Fetterman stays up-to-date on all of these developments. He focuses on how the new tax law, by limiting itemized deductions to only the top five percent of tax filers, is already having - and will likely continue to have - a major impact on the governance and finances of the not-for-profit sector.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this segment, you should be able to:

  • Explain why there is less incentive to make charitable contributions after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act;
  • Identify how "bunching" of contributions could aid charities as well as donors;
  • Distinguish between the nonprofit excise tax on executive compensation and its equivalent for public companies; and
  • Define what is meant by the "Johnson Amendment."
