CPAR NFP - Specialized Knowledge and Applications

CPAR GOV/NFP - Vol. 2019 - No. 1 - 03 - Not-for-Profit Organizations and the Tax Law: An Odd Couple

Course Overview
Last year’s enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act brought fundamental changes to U.S. tax law, including many new provisions specifically affecting nonprofit organizations. Fortunately for us, regular expert commentator Allen Fetterman stays up-to-date on all of these developments. He focuses this quarter on how the tax law, by limiting the usefulness of itemized deductions, is already having (and will likely continue to have) a major impact on the finances of the not-for-profit sector.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this segment, you should be able to:

  • Explain why there is less incentive to make charitable contributions after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act;
  • Identify how "bunching" of contributions could aid charities as well as donors;
  • Define what is meant by a "transportation fringe benefit"; and
  • Distinguish between the treatment of net operating losses by not-for-profit organizations and commercial enterprises.
